My daughter was punished by running for not selling enough cookie dough for her high school basketball team. Is this legal? I would like law references if possible. I do not want to get coaches in trouble, just stop the madness.

Should pro-gay-marriage advocates organize a boycott of dictionaries and other reference materials?

Friday, March 27th, 2009
The Autodidact Jedi asked:

I was just reading my dictionary, and for marriage it says:

the social institution under which a man and woman establish their decision to live as husband and wife by legal commitments;

the legal or religious ceremony that formalizes the decision of a man and woman to live as husband and wife;

the formal declaration or contract by which act a man and a woman join in wedlock.

Obviously Webster must be a bigot. Are *** activists planning a boycott yet? Will it include all reference materials, or just the “tough parts”?
Kyle - what are you talking about?? Moses married a Cushite thousands of years ago. Where do you do your research?
While I’m thinking about it…Boaz married a Moabite, David a Hittite, Rahab was a Canaanite….I could go on
Kyle - Regardless, I am not seeing that in the dictionary. You are missing my point I think. I just want to make sure I am not referencing bigot materials. Do I need to throw out my dictionary or what?

Is it legal to not interview a person that is qualified?

ikamal_50 asked:

I previously worked in a position for 1 year and was working for that same company for 4 other years. i was a temporary resident in the u.s. so i had to have a work permit. well it expired so i had to leave. but it was on good terms with the company. now i have my green card and tried to apply but they would not interview me for that particular possition. i applied for another position and i have not been hired. i mainly think my old manager did not like me for personal reasons. so now she is giving bad references to the other location and not willing to interview me even though i’m well qualified for both positions. Is this legal?
also, i’m not a recent immigrant or somebody that doesn’t speak english. i been here since i was 5. so i’m as american as you can get. Also, i might not have been clear on my question. I’m not sayin im entitled to anything. I’m asking is it illegal to deny an INTERVIEW. The answers i’m getting are as if i asked about getting the actual position.
let me ask this then. is it required for them to give you a reason?

Is it legal to sell paintings of commercial logo interpretations?

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009
Slick Mac asked:

I like to paint logos, but I try to combine 2 different common logos into one logo that looks familiar, but is not an exact duplicate of either. My question is, is it legal to sell my artwork, or am I going to have problems with Coca-Cola and McDonalds getting all bent out of shape if I morph thier logos together. If thier is some law, can someone reference it?

I’d also appreciate if someone could list all of the rights typically given to married people as a reference. I heard someone say that there was something like 210 legal rights involved in marriage.

In California, is it legal for employers to give bad reports on former employees?

Friday, March 13th, 2009
boy asked:

I was told that this is not legal…..all they are supposed to do is verify that I was an employee. I have been using my former employer as a reference on applications for new jobs. I had to include them on the application because I had been there for years. I was unfairly fired from this company, and then took legal action against them. They **** me, but they should keep their opinion to themselves. If they are bad-mouthing me to potential new employers, what can I do about it?

In Canada, are there any legal requirements that a company must check references of a contractor?

Penelope’s Mom asked:

I have been told by the ‘hr administrator’ that our small business must check references of everyone we pay money to provide a service. For example, we recently hired a freelance software programmer who works from home and invoices us as work is completed. What level of background check is required? I have not been able to find anything that says it is a ‘must do’.

Laws on Reference Checks for employment. How can you prove wrong doing?

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009
howard o asked:

I have been told that it is not legal for a former employee to give incorrect or hurtful information on a reference check for a persecutive new employer. How would one prove that this is occurring when these checks are done over phone calls, that I do not believe can be recorded. How have people won these types of cases? What are the actual laws. Can someone say “He was a terrible employee, I would be careful”? What is the recourse? Have these cases ever been won against large companies?
